TURF IN AUSTRALIA

THE GRAND NATIONAL REDD ITCH'S FATAL FALL NARROW WIN FOR RIAWENA (Received July 15, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 14 No fewer than four of the nine runners in the Grand National Steeplechase at Flemington yesterday came to grief, including the great juniper Redditch, who carried the maximum weight, 12.7. Redditch broke a hind leg and had to he destroyed. Tho race was won by Riawena, who defeated Pactolus by a head, with Oldhomo ten lengths away third. Half a furlong further back came the New Zealander Menibo, while Richmond Tiger, the only other horse who stood up was hopelessly out of the race. The course' was heavy after rain. Pactolus was first favourite, Redditch second and Membo third. Ras Kassa and Fulhani were early casualties, falling before a mile had been accomplished. Pactolus, Boy Blue, Richmond Tiger, Membo and Redditch kept well together for two miles, when tho field began to spread out. There was dismay when Redditch fell at the last fence in the lane. Riawena, Oldhome, Boy Blue and Pactolus alternately assumed tho lead. Boy Blue then fell, and Membo began gradually to drop back, while Richmond Tiger was completely tailed off.Pactolus looked like winning approaching the Inst jump, but Riawena, ridden desperately, just got up to beat him on tho post. The New Zealand-bred horse Metro, ridden by K. Voitre, ran second in the July Handicap, in which Epigram, Quarto and Firebrick were unplaced. Shatter was unplaced in the Doutta Galla Hurdles, won by Akanree. Results:' —

After winning the Wanda Steeplechase at Caulfield on June 22 with 12.11, lib. less than he carried to victory in tho same race last year, he became a warm favourite for the Grand National, but apparently the heavy state of the going caused Pactolus to receive better support on the clay.
