BACON EXPORT LEVY

BRITAIN'S NEW PLAN

HELP FOR HOME PRODUCER I FOREIGN SUPPLIES AFFECTED t . . 1 Bacon imports into Great Britain are q to be increased next year and a levy i will be imposed on them to aid the r home industry. This was announced on June 8 by Mr. Waltei Elliot, Minister a of Agriculture, in a reply to a qucs- I tion in the House ot Commons and | in a subsequent statement to representatives of the Pigs and Bacon Marketing Boards. t Mr. Elliot said the Government con- i sidered that certain developments of the general plan for regulating bacon * imports and assisting the home producer might now be made. It proposed ( that the policy of maintaining a regu- ; lated market should be continued, but 1 was prepared to contemplate, as from the beginning of next year, an increase in the vbiume of imported supplies, t subject to the imposition of a limited i ■charge on imports from foreign coun- > tries. 1 The proceeds would be devoted to the • assistance of the home industry as the , situation might require. The assent of < foreign countries who had a treaty ! right to free entry of bacon into the United Kingdom was) necessary, and ' the Government would open negotia- ' tions with them forthwith, i Mr. Elliot told the representatives of I'the Pigs and Bacon Marketing Boards j that the assistance to be given to the | home producer would be related to a, : volume of home production showing a ! moderate increase over the home output for 1935. As in the case of payments under the Wheat Act, the assistance per unit would diminish as home production increased beyond that volume. * Hh hoped the new arrangements would help the two boards to co-oper-ate in promoting efficiency in production, processing and marketing, in regard to which a development scheme should be of great assistance. In his ; view there was nothing in the pro- j posals to hinder the two boards from ; agreeing on the terms of the contract j for 1936 now, so as to communicate them to producers in the early autumn. FREIGHT ON BONER BEEF COUNCIL SEEKS REDUCTION [from ouh own correspondent] HAMILTON. Sunday The. opinion that boner beef cattle should be transported to the freezing works by rail and should not be driven by road was expressed at a meeting of the Raglan County Council on Friday. The chairman, Mr. H. W. Wilson, said an enormous amount of damage was done to the roads of the county by driven stock, while the cattle lost condition in the process. Mr. S. I. Crawford said boner beef should be reiled at a. lower freight , than the ordinary beef classes, owing i to their lower value. It was decided to approach other local bodies with a view to making a joint request to the Government to reduce the frcaght on boner beef.
