PETROL FROM PEAT
GERMAN CHEMISTS' CLAIM LESS EFFICIENCY ADMITTED (Received July 7. 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. July 6 The Daily Telegraph's Berlin correspondent states that tho production of petrol from peat is tho latest discovery of Gorman chemists, who aro striving to make the country independent of foreign supplies. They claim that they have definitely proved that a gallon of petrol can be produced from 141b. of peat, though they admit that a motorcar's performance with this fuel is 20 per cent lower than with mineral petrol. HIGH QUALITY PROVED AUSTRALIAN SHALE OIL (Received July 7. 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 7 A barrel of crude shale oil which was produced at Newnes and was subjected to exhaustive cracking and refining tests in the United States has been returned to Sydney, and is stated to bo at least equal in quality to the imported motor spirit now sold in Australia.
