TRACK ACTIVITIES

SCHOOLING OF JUMPERS VALPEEN'S DASHING DISPLAY FAST FIVE BY CROUPIER [BY TELKGIt.U'U OWN CO 11UKSI'ONI)l.NT] WELLINGTON. Sunday Much interest was centred in yesterday s work, particularly the jumping. Fine weather prevailed and track conditions wero excellent for this time of the year. There was quite a race atmosphere about the schooling task over four steeplechaso tonces by Valpeen (W. J. Boivden) Pahu (,M. 11. Nicol) Ruby Meteor (A. Gilmer) Spalpiko (R. Savage) Billy Boy (]•:. Burgess) and Haakon (D. J. Btu gess). Valpeen ran to the trout before tho end, with Billy Boy making up ground to beat Spalpiko over the last lence. Haakon was kept in I;i-hind to enable him to have a good sight of his fences. Valpeen went with great dash, and gavo a perfect exhibition of jumping. Ho looks better this year than he did last July. Spalpiko also jumped particularly well. In doing a round of pacing afterward, ho struck himself and was lame. Pahu cleared tho first three well, but tried to run olf at the brush. Billy Boy, Ruby Meteor and Haakon shaped satisfactorily. Royal Limond's " Leg " Royal Limond has caused D. O'Connor a lot of trouble during the last twenty-four hours. He reached Trentham very lame and with a " leg." However, it transpired that this was duo to a liniment that was used having the etl'cct of a light blister. Treatment overnight saw the leg practically normal this morning beyond a bit of skin soreness, and he was able to work over the steeplechaso fences with the hacks, High Speed (H. Turner) and Monastic (R. Drinkwatcr). Royal Limond and High Speed soon left Monastic behind, but both had to be ridden into the fences, which they took very carefully. Royal Limond made a poor jump at the sodwall. Monastic is reported to have schooled well at Riccarton, but this was a poor effort and he tried to baulk at the brush. At the finish he made a very half-hearted attempt and landed across the fence with his forefeet. Ho may, of course, do much bettor in a race. Reminder CJ. C. Richards) screwed badly at his jumps when going over the same fences with Diamond (R. Smith). Diamond's display was much the better, and Reminder was pulled up without jumping the brush. Sir Musk i'B. H. Sullivan) went out to jump the country alone, but after scrambling over the sodwall ran off at the other fences. He may do better in company. Travelling Agent Improves The first to school over hurdles were Red Sun (C. Thomson) and Imasur-ey vE. Burgess), but neither fenced well, although Imasurvey improved toward the end. Kia Tina (W. Shand) led Travelling Agent (P. E. and Trishna (D. Bush} over five hurdles. Travelling Agent impressed. He got over the jumps very smartly arid made a lot of friends for his engagements next week. King Thomond (W. J. Pascoe) and Master Musk (F. Thompson 1 were associated i:n a similar bout. King Thomond's exhibition was a good one. much better than that of his companion. who seemed to jump wildly. Verden (E. Burgess) was schooled over eight hurdles, giving a good display. Croupie:: was again the leading worker 011 the flat. Working on the trial grass he comfortably accounted for Rebel Ch ; ef over five furlongs in 1.5, the last half-mile in 51 l-ss. The time was the best of the morning over the distance. Croupier has been working exceptionally well, but he was galloping almost as well prior to his recent- failures. Tt is hoped that he will do better 011 the more roomy track. Rebel Chief was no match for him. but his work was satisfactory, as his trainer says lie is short of a gallop or two. Prince Val's Lameness Orapai was within half a length of Reipar at. tho close of six furlongs in ; I.IOV. Orapai is improving with every gallop and he worked exceptionally well. Prince Val reached Trentham distinctly lame, but he worked with plenty of dash this morning. He was very lame again on cooling olf. Lapel boat Horowhenua and Might by three lengths over seven furlongs in 1.32 2.5. Lapel's effort was a good one, and points to him being a light-weight possibility in the Whyte Handicap, in which he will be ridden by R. W. Savage. Ho was, however, in receipt of a fair amo int of weight from Horowhenua. Might was running on at the end. Water Power and Brown Pearl went nicely over four furlongs in 5-ls, not being extended. Revision hit out well over a mile in 1.18, and looks very fit. Acceptable did an easv six furlongs in 1.24. Ayresleigh was running 011 to beat Copenna. by half a length over five furlongs in I.G 1-5, the last half mile in 52 2-ss. Debham comfortably defeated Delysia and Gate Crasher over the same distance in 1.65, tho last half mile in 52 I-ss. Wahine Nui was three lengths in front of Bluo Tiger after covering the last four of five furlongs in 51 4-ss. Korero and Miladi took 3.8 2-5 for five furlongs, but were not doing their best at the finish. The best half-mile of the morning was recorded by Grand Score, who beat Master Reynard by three lengths in 50s. Grand Score has previously raced well at Trentham in the winter and the race he had at Levin last Saturday has sharpened him up. Vocal has been a tri/le sore, but his trainer, P. T. Ifogan, savs that the trouble is not serious. Rain for Yesterday's Work Conditions for work this morning were very unpleasant, providing a, marked contrast to yesterday. Most trainers were content to send their horses out and then retreat to shelter from the rain. The grass was used for horses going faster than pace-work, while the others used the sand. Master Musk attracted attention by the way in which be handled the heavy going in a good work-out, over two rounds with Royal Limond. Valpeen, Haakon, Verden and Spalpiko all did working gallops. Spalpiko (.lid nut hit out too freely. IC. J. Ellis gave Rasouli and Adult a. mile and a-quarter on the grass, while Merry Peel and Rebel Lad also worked. All those horses look well. Sea Fox and Prince Acre separately galloped six furlongs. Both went well m the going. The Hawke's Bay contingent, including Curie, Maine, Royal Banquet, Hunting Cat and Mercian Prince were out working. London and Dunmuro schooled together over four steeplechaso fences. London went the better and gave a good display. Dunmuro was heavily bandaged and thero is a report that ho is not at his best. If Rebel Chief races satisfactorily at the meeting 110 may be taken to Melbourne later. The RangfSi' is an unlikely starter in the Hack Steeplechase on Tuesday. . , Lyeidas has not done anything to "ot into the limelight since his arrival, but he has got through satisfactory work. Ho is a very good stayer and this, with the going, will be to his advantage in a race like tho Winter Hurdles.
