Sunday Beginning with a keen breeze and ( drizzling rain which set in late last ( night, a, heavy southerly was experi- j enced in Wellington yesterday. All day i tho wind blew a gale and rain fell , ' steadily for most of the daylight hours, i Heavy seas pounded the coastline. A ! high tide occurred in the morning, but ; it reached its height before the wind ; ( had increased to its full strength, with ' , tho result that before noon tho water i had receded far enough to prevent ■ damage being done. ; There were a number of slips on high- [ ways, including one which held up all I traffic over the Rimutakas for a short period. The slip was cleared sufficiently 1 to allow traffic to pass before serious ; delays had occurred. There wero no . signs of the storm abating to-night. 3 CANTERBURY EXPERIENCE i MANY RIVERS FLOODED 1 [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT! I CHRISTCHURCH, Sunduy Mist, rain and heavy showers were general throughout Canterbury during j tho week-end, and heavy falls are reported in North Canterbury and the Kaikoura district. Much of the snow on s the foothills has now melted, and all 0 streams and rivers in the Kaikoura disII trict are swollen. The Mason and Cons way Rivers were in flood to-night, and e it was considered impossible, in consey ! quence, to get through to Kaikoura ! by the inland route. The Stony and n | Ferniehurst Creeks on the coast road •-! are also running high and it is anticiv j pated that they will be impassable by | to-morrow. Since the rain started to : fall on Friday afternoon about lsin. q has been recorded near Waiau. The rain was still falling late to-night and j there was little sign of the weather ' clearing. There has been heavy rain over Banks Peninsula and all creeks are ! swollen at Akaroa this evening. The ! level of Lako Forsyth, the outlet of i which was cleared on Wednesday even- ! ing, is now normal, however, and ! danger of flooding in Little River and Birdlands Flat has been largely averted.
