TWO DOUBLE CENTURIES DEMPSTER AND MAXWELL LONDON. June 28 Lancashire, last year's county cricket champion eleven, was defeated for the second time this week, when Derbyshire won a. closely-contested game at Old Trafford, by seven runs. A. Sandham, playing for Surrey against Hampshire, completed his 100 th three-figure score in first-class cricket. There were two double centuries in a match between Leicester and Sir Julian Cahn's eleven. The successful batsmen were C. S. Dempster, the former New Zealand player, who was unbeaten; and J. Maxwell, whose chanceless innings included four sixes and 44 fours. The latter's partnership with Newman added 336 for the second wicket. H. Verity, the Yorkshire left-arm spin bowler, is the first to take 100 wickets this season. Following are the results of the latest series of matches: — LEICESTER V. CAHN'S TEAM Sir Julian Cahn's Eleven: First innings, 567 (Maxwell 268, Newman 101); second, three for 81. Leicester: First innings, 603 (Dempster 207 not out, Berry 88, Watson 83, Bradshaw, 83; Peebles eight for 1/8). ' The match was drawn. MIDDLESEX V, WORCESTER Middlesex: First innings, 312 (Hendren 76); second, 290 (Hendren 62). Worcester: First innings, 287 (J. Smith six for 92); second, 211 (Sims five for 63). Middlesex won by 104 runs. , YORKSHIRE V. GLAMORGAN Yorkshire: First innings, seven for 423, declared (Sutcliffo 121, Barber 120). . Glamorgan: First innings, 178; followon, 145. Yorkshire won by an innings and 100 runs. HAMPSHIRE V. SURREY Hampshire: First innings, 79 (Gover four for 21); second, 188. Surrey: First innings, 274 (Sandham 103; Hill five for 46). Surrey won by an innings and seven runs. DERBY V. LANCASHIRE Derby: First innings, 227 (Booth five for 44); second, nine for 260, declared. Lancashire: First innings, 168; second, 312 (Iddon 131). Derby won by seven runs. GLOUCESTER V. ESSEX Gloucester: First innings, 163 (Neale 80); second, 102 (Read six for 38). Essex: First innings, 206 (Parker five for 51); second, one for 62.
