RICCARTON GOSSIP

SCHOOLING OF JUMPERS HOROWHENUA gallops well MOUNT FOR J. McINALLY [by TELEGIUrU —OWN COHRESPONDKNT] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday Training operations wero onco again restricted at Riccarton to-day by the effects of another heavy frost, which did not permit of work until a late hour in the morning. The outside of tho trial grass was open, .and although the surface was hard and slippery in places, the majority of the horses who are to race at Trentham were given useful work, with an occasional sprinting taskdown tho back stretch. The track around the schooling steeplechase courso was not much affected, and Punchcstown. (H. Turner) was sent over ten obstacles. He jumped carefully, probably owing to the frosty surface, but his display was quite satisfactory and would no doubt have been better if he had had more pace on, or had been in company. Jolly Beggar (Turner) jumped four hurdles in his usual smart manner. Tie is not to go to Trentham, it being considered that he will not be partial to tho Trentham going, and that it will bo wiser to keep him for coming Ric-cjy-ton racing. Other Riccarton horses who will not fulfil their engagements at Trentham are Grecian Prince, Doctor Duthie, Metal Bird and probably Impossible. Vitaphone has been sent to S. Barr to be prepared for hurdle events. He is the property of Mr. W. Parsons, of Amberley, who purchased him from Mr. W. R. Kemball last year. Unfortunately the gelding met with an accident next day, and Parsons has not been able to race him since, but has done a lot of hunting with him. Parr's large team is likely to bo reduced next week by tho departure of Colossian, Capital and other horses owned by Mr. H. Archer, who has decided to have them kept at his property at Rangiora for the remainder of the winter season. Horowhenua has done well since returning from Ellerslie, and torday galloped well over six furlongs. He is to be ridden at Trentham by the North Islaud apprentice J. Mclnally, who won on him at Ellerslie.
