CONTESTS IN COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES MANIAPOTO BEATS OHURA Rugby football competitions were continued in various country centres of the Auckland province on Saturday afternoon, when several representative matches were decided. The following results were forwarded by correspondents of the Hkrai.d: — Te Kultl.—The Maniapoto representatives beat Ohura by 6 points to 3 in a sterling forward tussle at To Kuiti. J, Barlow opened the scoring for Maniapoto with a dive from the blind side of a scrum, H. McLeod failing to convert. After half-timo the Ohura forwards broko through for Kemp to even the score, Jones missing the kick. Half-way through the second spell Pickrang sent his backs away and B. Barlow sold a dummy which gave McLeod the chance to cross, but his kick failed. In spite of strenuous efforts by the Ohura team, Maniapoto kept its three points margin until the end of the game. J. Craig was Maniapoto's best forward and he was well supported by Davis and Pickrang. McLeod played a splendid game in the backs, saving his team time and again. The Maniapoto rear division were disappointing as a unit. For Ohura, the insido backs, Crossman, Zemba and Williams, played well, and Morgan and Kemp led the forwards. Mr. S. Walker was referee.

Taumarunul. Special representative Rugby match: Taumaruni, 41, Taihape, 20. Dargaville.—The Northern Wairoa Rugby Union's games resulted:—Kaihu Valley, 3, Southern, 3; Northern Star, 9, Dargaville, 0. Third grade: Dargaville, 14, High School, 3; Ruawai, 5, Southern, 0. No junior competition games wore played.

Whakatane.—Club competitions wore continued on rain-soaked grounds, making play slow and scores low. Following are the results of eenior matches in the Whakatane Union: Waimnna, 6, Paroa, 0; Taneatua. 11, City, 9; Ruatoki won by default from Poroporo. Juniors: Taneatua, 8, City, G. Third grade: School A, 3, Tanpatua, 0. Tauranga.—The Tauranga Rugby Union's senior competition waß continued in fine weather. The Papamoa United team from Te Puke met Matakana, a fast game being won by Papamoa United by 14 to G. Matakana led at half-time by 6 to 5, but Papamoa United was definitely superior in the second half and added nine points, while Matakana failed to increase its tally. Tries for the winners were gained by McCullough, W. Webber, Lipsey and Bennett, one being converted by M. Kingi. The scorers for Matakana were Rauhina and MacPherson, neither boina converted. The Jordan Cup game between Rangataua and Te Puna was won by Rangacaua by 21 points to 5. Junior competitions were suspended, as the junior representatives journeyed to Te Puke and played Te Puke (holder) for the Shalfoon Shield, a competition for junior teams in the Bay of Plenty. The game was keenly contested, Taurang«i winning by 8 to 3.

Opotiki.—The Opotiki representatives met Apanui in the Parata Cup competition and won comfortably by a margin of 19 points, the final score being:—Opotiki, 27, Apanm, 9. In the first half the Opotiki side threw the ball about in great style and soon rattled up 21 points. The pace of the Opotiki team took the Apanui side by surpnso and ft was not until near the end of the first spell that the latter commenced to show, up, when it scored its first try. The srore at half-time was: Opotiki, 21, Apanui, 3 Tn (lie second spell play was very tight and tht> Opotiki backs had little opportunity to get going. Both sides scored two tries each in the second half. Shalfoon and Williams played outstanding games in the Opotiki backs, while Craig was prominent in the forwards.

Rotorua.—Seniors: Waikite, 11, Utnhina, 3: Rotoiti a bye. Junior trial match: Probables, 9. Possibles, 0.

Morrinsvllle. —The Morrinsville senior representatives withstood the second Finlay Cup challenge of the season by defeating Putarura by 18 points 3. The game was more even than the points indicate. out the home side showed superiority in finishinn off movements. J. Leeson, the 1934 All Black, who cot as far as the final trial at Wellington this season, was always in the limelight. From a scrum near Putaruru's line the ball went out to Clarkin at centre, and he scored between the posts, w. Cameron converted. Another scrum in the visitors' twenty-five saw W. Cameron run round on the blind side and pass to Vivian, who scored in the corner. W. Cameron converted. Aitken broke away from halfway and passed infield to Lewer, who sent the ball on to G. Leeson, the last-named scoring in a handy position for W. Cameron to convert. Morrirvsviile was penalised for offside just outside its twenty-ftve, and Hall kicked a goal. Half-time sounded with the score:— Morrinsville, 15; Putaruru, 3. Only one try was scored in the second spell. From a scrum inside halfway W. % Cameron cut _in and ran to the twenty-five before passing to his brother, C. Cameron, who forced his wny over to score. As a curtain-raiser to the Finlay Cup match the two leading teams in the junior competition, Motumaoho nnd Terriers, played a hard and fast game for the former team to win by 10 ppints to 3. Other junior games resulted :--Tainui, 14, Eastern, 0: United, 13, Tahuna, 0; Kereone won by default from Old Boys. Huntly.—Seniors: Gordonton, 18, Huntly. 6. Juniors: Huntly, 0, Te Akau, 0. Third grade: Huntly High School Old Boys, 51, Huntly, 0. Cambridge.—The Waipa senior B representatives visited Cambridge and defeated the local B representatives by 8 points to 0. Heavy going affected play, the ball being difficult to handle. For the winners Scrivener and Turney scored tries, one being converted by Quin. In the curtain-raiser the Waipa junior representatives defeated Cambridge by 8 points to 7. For Waipa, Cruickshank and Brill_ scored tries, one being converted by Brill. D. Clow scored a try and Wehipeihana kicked a field goal for Cambridge.

Te Awamutu.—Qne of the hardcst-foucrht Rugby games played at Albert Park for a long time eventuated when the Waipa and Cambridge senior A representatives met. The ground was heavy and a drizzling rain persisted almost throughout the match. At half-time no score had been gained, but there was plenty of really bright football. In the second spell the Waipa forwards attacked solidly and, when Kelly saved, the ball went to W. Tombs, who fed J. Hanna and W. Bell (Waipa's fullback) came up fast to receive_ and dash over right at the corner. The kick failed. Another bright movement by the Waipa backs saw the ball handled by six players for R. Jacknon to cut in nicely and scoro near the posts. M. Bell converted. The game ended:—Waipa, 8; Cambridge, 0. Mr. C. Wallace, of Cambridge, was referee. The curtain-raiser was between the Cambridge and Waipa junior B representatives and the home team had a decided advantage practically throughout, to win by 20 points to 0. In the Waipa Unions' third grade championship competition Old Boys defeated Suburbs by 12 points (four tries by R. Fraser) to 0, and High School defeated Te Awamutu by 9 points to 8. Matamata.—ln the first round of the Roigard Cup competition Matamata beat Wardville by 12 points to 8 after a surprising reversal of form in the second half. Wardville hud the better of early play and A. Hughes cut in nicely to score r.ear the posts. K. Laurie converted. Laurie also kicked a penalty goal. Just before haHtime Fitzgerald kicked a good penalty goat for Matamata. In the second half Simpson and Rolf scored tries for Matamata and Fitzgerald kicked another penalty goal. In the other matah Patetere beat Hinuera by 20 points to 0. Juniors: Old Boys, 3, Rnungaiti, 3: Wairere, 3, Matamata. 3; Hinuera. 0, Patetere, 0; Wnlton, 6, Waharoa, 0. Paeroa. —All Paeroa football matches wore postponed owing to tho condition of the -playing fields. Helensvllle.—The Kaipara Rugby Union's ■ matches were plnyed on wet and heavy fields. Senior grade results were:—Helensville, 6, Kumeu, 0; Silverdale, 5, Kaukapakapa, 3. Junior grade: Kaukapakapa. 9, Parakai, 7; Woodhill won by default from Silverdale; Kumeu, 27, Helensville, 0. Walkare.—Seniors: Wnerenga, 6, Ohinewai, 5; Wqodleigh, 6, Rangiriri, 3; Taniwha Wanderers', 17, Waiterimu, 0. Schoolboys: Ohinewai, 17, Waerenga, 0. Tuakau.—ln the senior A grade of the South Auckland Rugby Union's competitions Franklin defeated Mangntawhiri at Tuakau by 12 points to 3. The game Was played on a sodden ground, covered in places by pools of water. Under the conditions the handling by the Franklin backs was creditable. Trios for Franklin were scored by Swanson (2). Hewitt and Passau,; S. Mcßobbie ecored Mnngatawhiri's only try. The match between Pukekohe and Waiulni, at Waiuku. ended in a draw, 3 nil. Apart from a good back movement, which ended in Kaihati scoring for Waiuku. the game was chiefly a forward one. For Pukekohe, Sheppnrd scored a try. Taupiri.—The senior game played between Tnupiri and Te Aknu at Taupiri was quite a good exhibition of the code until halftime, after which the visiting backs asserted themselves and scores came monotonously. Shortly after the start of play Taupiri was awarded a penalty, Catley kicking a good goal. Maniopoto scored for Te Akau and M. Thompson kicked a penalty 'goal, and the

score' at half-time was:—Xe Akau, 6, Taupiri, 3. The visiting gacks then threw the ball about, Maniopoto again scoring for M. Thompson to convert. Further scores were obtained for To Akau by G. Thompson. Amoukete and Maniopoto, M. Thompson converting two and Lapp one. Catley kicked nnotlier penalty from a very difficult angle for Taupiri. The game ended:—To Akau. 2G, Taupiri, G. A good game was witnessed at Huntly when two of the leading teamß in the Taupiri Sub-union's competitions met. The ground was hieavy and play was confined mostly to the forwards. At half-time Huntly led Gordonton, G —3. After the interval the Gordonton pnek was getting the better of the tight play and also showed its superiority in the loose. Juniors: Franklin, 12, Pukekohe, 0. Hamilton.—The Hamilton Rugby Union's queen carnival was opened and to mark the occasion a special representative match was played between Hamilton and Matamata. Shortly befor»- tho commencement of play light rain began to fall and continued at intervals throughout the afternoon. The soft ground and greasy ball spoiled many movements. Hamilton was definitely superior throughout, winning by 11—0. With play at half-way Denz secured tho ball from a set scrum. It travelled out to Allen, who, when he was on the point of being pushed out. stepped smartly away from tho line and kicked to the centre. The forwards followed up Quickly and Fardington scored. He also converted the try. In the second spell the local forwards rushed the ball down the line and Flannagan had scored before the Matamata backs had time to offer any effective resistance, kick failed. Hamilton renewed its attack and Flannagan dived over in the corner for his second try. The game ended with no further score, Hamilton winning 11—0. In spite of the greasy ball good displays were given by the two fullbacks, D. Carlson and Lissette. Both handled well, and Carlson's line-kicking was very useful to Matamata. W. 11. Carlson also played well for the visitors. Hamilton s halfback, L. Denz, troubled tho opposition, as also did the first five-eighths, Dempsey. Of the two sets of forwards Hamilton played a gnme more suited to the conditions, the refereo was Mr. H. G. Carter. Juniors: High School, 15. To Kowhai, 3: Old Boys. 3. Karamu, 0; Marist, 11, Railway, 6; crankton, 11, Technical Old Boys, 3; Rovers won by default from Ruakura.

Whangarei.—-After the very heavy rain in Whangarei during the week, most of the outdoor playing areas wero in very bad condition. Kensington Park, however, was in fairly good condition, and six Rugby football games were played there. Notwithstanding the trial game between the North Auckland representative team and the northern sub-union's team, the Whangarei union played all its usual fixtures. The chief attraction was the senior game between City, which is second in the senior championship competition, and Maungakaramea. It resuited in a draw, each team scoring 11 points. The City team was weakened by the absence of two players in the representative game, and Maungakaramea was at its full strength. The match was somewhat disappointing and was mostly a forward scramble. The Maungakaramea forwards were much heavier than their opponents, and made every effort to control the game. They dominated in the scrums and line-outs, and, when near the line, were difficult to stop. For City Shepherd scored a try, which Roos converted. Robins kicked a penalty goal and also scored a try. For Maungakaramea Litt scored two tries, one of which was converted by J. Allison, and S. Albion also scored a try. Other senior games played were:— Mnng ikaliia, 8, Horahora, 5; Pipiwai defaulted to Hikurangi. Juniors: Old Boys, li. City, 0; High School, 11, Manaia, 0. Third grade: Horahora. 11, High School, 3. Manukau.—Matches tinder the control of the Manukau Rugby Sub-union were played in spite of adverse weather conditions. The games resulted as follows: —Hunua. 5, Karaka. 0; Papakura, 0. Thames. —Playing before a fair attendance on a sodden ground Physical Training aefeated College Old Boys by 11 points to 3 The game developed into a fine forward struggle, with occasional glimpses of back play. In the junior match High, School, the lending team, defeated Hui Mai by 19 points to 11.

Warkw'orth.—Conditions were again atrocious for the games played under the Rodney Rugby Union, and in all cases the forwards dominated play. Results were ns follows: Wellsford. 17, Kaitoa. 3: Puhoi. 3, Matakana, 3: Port Albert. 3. Pakiri. 0.
