HOUSE IN PITT STREET PAKAPOO IN PROGRESS CHINESE FINED £SO As a sequel to a raid by police on a house at 40 Pitt Street on Friday night, a Chinese, Wong Yin, aged 72, was charged in the Police Court on Saturday with occupying premises used as a common gaming house. Accused pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Fox said a constable had visited the promises on three occasions, and had marked pakapoo tickets. When Friday night's raid was made, accused was found sitting at a table on which were pakapoo paraphernalia. Three Europeans were present. " Accused is a persistent offender," added Mr. Fox. " Ho was fined £SO for a similar offence in October last." On behalf of accused, Mr. Tong said he was an old man who found it difficult to secure employment in the avenues usually open to Chinese. .Remarking that an impression that he approved of pakapoo might be given if he imposed a smaller fine, the magistrate, Mr. W. It. McKeanj S.M., fined accused £SO, in default three months' imprisonment. The three men found on the premises were fined 10s each, in default two days' imprisonment.

OPIUM CHARGES LAID 14 CHINESE IN COURT t 1 Arrested by a party of detectives who raided premises at 7 Fergusson Street, City, late on Friday night, a Chinese, Wong Mo, aged 36, appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday morning, charged with being the occupier of premises used for the purpose of smoking opium. Thirteen other Chinese were charged with being found in possession of prepared opium. Mr. Giesen appeared for Wong Mo and three of the other accused, six Chinese being represented by Mr. Tong. On tho application of Detective-Ser-geant McHugh, all the accused were remanded until Thursday, AYong Mo being allowed bail of £SO. Bail for each of the other accused was fixed at £25.
