RECEIPTS IN AUCKLAND SIX MONTHS' INCREASE £30,000 MORE FROM SALES TAX DECREASE IN BEER RETURNS The trend in the increase in imports shown in the March to May customs figures this year, compared with 1934, was continued last month. The customs duty collected in Auckland in June totalled £180,647, an increase of £II,BBB on the amount collected in June, 1934. Compared with the £153,992 collected in June, 1933, there was an advance of £26,655. Although the collections for tho six months also show an increase, the improvement is not so marked as that made in the first six months of 1934, over the corresponding period of 1933. For the six months just ended £1,248,563 was collected in customs duty, an increase of £14,647 on the £1,233,916 collected in the first six months of 1934. In the January-Juno period of 1933 only £1,034,018 was collected, so that the 1934 period showed an advance pf £199,898. Although this year's figures are only £14,647 in excess of last year's, they are, however, £214,515 better than those for 1933. Other Tax Sources Sales tax returns also show an increase, the £57,294 collected last month being £9344 greater than tho £47,905 collected in June, 1934. In the sixmonthly period £324,977 was collected, compared with £294,450 in the corresponding period last year, an increase of £30.527. No comparison can be made with 1933, as the sales tax did not como into operation until February of that year. Receipts of petrol and tyre duties last month tota led £36,728, compared with £39,416 in June, 1934, a decrease of £2688. There was, however, an increase over the six months, £294,675 having been collected this year, an amount £20,117 greater than the £274,558 received in the first half of last year. In the 1933 period the figure was £216,926. The beer duty return is the only one to show a decrease in both the monthly and six-monthly figures. Last month £8493 was collected under this head, compared with £10,189 in June, 1934, a decrease of -£1696. The six-monthly receipts were £64,910, a decrease of £2b9o on the 1334 half-yearly total of £67,800. In the first six months of 1933 £62,261 was collected, so that the return for the latest period shows an increase of £2649 on the January-June total two years ago. Comparison of Returns

WELLINGTON IMPROVEMENT SIX MONTHS' COMPARISON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Sunday The improvement shown in the customs revenue over the last year has been continued during June, a substantial increase being recorded in the net revenue. There was a decrease in motor spirit tax and in beer duty, but sales tax returns showed a substantial rise. The month's net customs revenue totalled £188,697, as against £154,052 for the corresponding period of the previous year. The net total for the first six months of the year is £1,267,782, an increase of £207,867 on the first six months of 1934. Motor spirit duty for June totalled £38,025, a decrease of £12,499. During the half-year £337,931 has fcoen collected. l " For tyre tax, £1326 was collected during the month, an increase of £3B over June, 1934. The six months' figures are £11,621. Sales tax realised £75,085 during the month, an increase of £20,042. During the six months, £407,935 has been collected, ami since the tax was first imposed on February 10, 1933, £1,530,796. Beer excise duty during June showed a decrease of £2i3, the figures being £3658 and £3871 respectively. For the first half of the year £26,641 was collected.

Net Customs revenue for June,, 1935, was £57,776, compared with £56,072 last year. Other revenue, with the previous year's figures in parentheses was collected as follows:—Sales tax, £25,714 (£22,780); Petrol tax, £16,546 (£14,847); tyre tax, £895 (£789); beer duty, £6255 (£0172).
