COMMISSIONER RESIGNS MR. P. D. N. VERSCHAFFELT [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] DANNEVIRKE, Saturday Tho acting-Prime Minister, Sir Alfred Ransom, announces that Mr. Paul D. N. Verschflffelt, C.M.G., Public Service Commissioner since 1922, has tendered his resignation from that position. Sir Alfred states that, acting on tho advice of his Ministers, the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, has accepted the resignation as from Juno 30. Mr. A. D. Thomson will for the present continue to act as Public Service Commissioner. Mr. Versohaffelt's resignation was sent from London. Mr. VerschafEelt went to England with the Minister of Finance, tho Rt. Hon. J. G. Coaltes, in connection with the meat negotiations.
Mr. Verscliaffelt was in 1922 appointed Public Service Commissioner, an office that placed the public services of New Zealand under his control. For two previous years he had been assistant-commissioner. Mr. Verscliaffelt, who was educated at the Marist Brothers' School, Napier, and at the Victoria University College, is n fellow of the Incorporated Society of Accountants, and n barrister and solicitor. Ho entered the public service in 1904. In 1930 Mr. Verscliaffelt was reappointed for a further term of seven years, but in April of last year it was announced that extended leavo of absence had been granted to him on account of his health.
