TRAINING TRIALS

SOUND WORK PERFORMED NIMBUS AND GREAT LOGAN BCNNIE DIRECT GOES WELL BY ABAYDOS Although the cinders track at Epsom provided good footing yesterday morning, and a few horses were sent along in useful work, tho majority used the sand track. This was very heavy, but nevi rtheless several candidates for Saturday accomplished sound tasks. On the cinders the C. F. Mark Memorial Handicap horses, Nimbus and Great Lou an, attracted attention by their efforts. Nimbus (A. W. Broughton) conceded Reel Hope (K. F. Morrison) two second:, start from the mile and a-quar-ter post, and beat him homo comfortably in 2.55. Red Hope, who hopped away smartly, set a solid pace, but Xir ibus was with him at the end of six furlongs in 1.46. Crossing the top Red Hope drew out again, but once into the straight Nimbus ran past him to wir easily and clock 1.9 for the last hall:. /mbus did his work attractively and war not bustled over the last furlong. He appreciated the firm ground, but is .n such splendid condition that he is capable of running a good race under ad' erse conditions. He claims two engagements, and if reserved for tho spi int should be very hard to beat. Red Hcpe paced in good style and kept his stablemate busy for a mile, which ho rai:, in 2.21. When he was headed ho was not pressed, and finished his task in 2.58 2-5.

Improvement in Stamina Great Logan (L. A. Maidens) was allotted strong unhoppled work over two mi es. He displayed keenness and there is no doubt about his fitness. His best performances have been registered at a mile and a-quarter, but in his present condition he is showing improved stamina and is racing well at two miles. Clare Rey (L. 0. Thomas) gave a good display of free-legged pacing, hittirg out boldly in a sharp run down thu back. He has put on a good deal of condition with recent racing and is in splendid heart. Star Pronto (B. Dyer) showed some dash in a couple of short sprints while traversing three circuits. Racing has had a good effect on him and he is one of the best free-legged pacers at present in commission. Supertax (T. Leadbetter) worked usefully over several circuits, and looked very bright. He came into the limelight as, a promising pacer at Hawera at Easter, when he gained two firsts and a second in three starts, and he handled tie heavy going so well in winning the Marconi Handicap last Saturday that ho has prospects of adding to his list of successes. Kewpie's Crest (W. Gee) was sent along solidly without the straps, and hit out freely. He has developed into a good type of three-year-old. Cornwall Handicap Winner Prince Pedro (C. Brennan), with Kia ELaha on the lead, was allotted strong work. The Cornwall Handicap winner has proved his ability to handle ground t'aat stops many horses in his class and tie again holds reasonable prospects in the Princo of Wales Handicap. Kia Kaha, who has notched several minor [ilacings without winning, did not show to advantage on Saturday, but with a small field in the Manukau Handicap should have a chance to make amends. Takatakahai (A. W. Broughton) 1 rotted steadily over several circuits. The half-brother to Whakahihi is a strong trotter and should be capable of handling heavy ground, but lack of racing experience may be against him. Worthy Boy (L. Laver) worked uoundly over three laps, displaying some onergy on the concluding circuit. The Te Rapa-trained pacer, who has built jp with racing, appreciated the firm >raek and was staying on much better ;han in his efforts in heavy ground. Bonnie Direct (C. Moran) was ioppled up and sent three laps at a solid pace on the sand. She revelled in her task, hitting out with freedom and showing dash in the final stages. Sho ran well enough last Saturday to indicate that a little improvement should make her dangerous in the Liverpool Handicap. Ann Punish (R- Townley) trotted very evenly over several circuits. The Timaru mare has taken no harm from her race and although sho will be better suited on a dry track, should run a solid race in the Members' Handicap Our McKinney (N L. Vernall), unhoppled, paced resolutely over a mile and a-half, and was not lacking in dash in a short run home. He is in great heart.

Jackie Thorpe's Condition Lucky Love (J. Peters) was worked in saddle and after going two circuits at a solid clip, sprinted a useful quarter. He should be all the better for his race last Saturday, whon he made a creditable showing, and he promises to be in the picture in the Juno Handicap. Jackie Thorpe (C. Pickering) was given a sound free-legged task, but moved a trifle short and was favouring his off hind log. He has been a ! very consistent performer over all distances this season, and will be spelled after the meeting. Rockella (C. Moran) worked in use- ! ful style, displaying keenness when allowed to step along over the last few furlongs. He has not had much experience of racing on heavy ground, but his condition should assist him to race solidly. Worthy Nor (P. Morrison), • Audo Patch (C. G. Lee) and Autumn Lou (G. H. Stubbs) trotted without mistake over four circuits. Worthy Nor looks very bright and in spite of her 36yds. penalty should again run a sound race. Audo Patch, who raced consistently at Manawatn, Wanganui and Cambridge, has done well during the last two weeks and it should not bo for want of condition if he fails to race prominently. Manna's Son (E. S. Groat), Ranfurly Lass (G. T. Mitchell), Manoeuvre (L. A. Maidens), Auto Machine (A. | Brown), Kewpie's King (J. Gee), and j Tinokaha (J. Paton) were worked steadily. * I S. M. August gave Homeward and Great Chum saddlo tasks, and J. Eraser had his team, Mountain Dell, Bracken and Tempest, doing light exercise in the centre of tho course.
