SPIKES ON RAILWAY
EFFORT TO WRECK TRAIN DERAILING OF ENGINE What is believed to have been a deliberate attempt to wreck the LismoreBallina train in New South Wales by placing obstructions on the line was made in a small cutting on the Booyons branch lately. A number of dog spikes had been placed along the line, and only the fact that the train was travelling on an up-grade when the engine struck the obstacles and became derailed averted a serious accident. The permanent way was torn up for about 60 yards, but the service was restored after a delay of half an hour. The train, in addition to a crew of three, carried two passengers. All escaped injury.
