BOWLING NOTES
ANNUAL MEETINGS OF CLUBS
AUCKLAND CENTRA'S SEASON BY SKir The weather on Saturday caused a complete stoppage of bowling and in consequence the challenge games for the various trophies were postponed for the day. The same arrangements for these matches hold good for this week's fixtures. A number of clubs have held their annual meetings and special significance attaches to the Grey Lynn Club 011 account of the success of its members in open competition during the season. The president, Mr. E E. Buckley, who was re-elected for n further term, has reason to be proud of such good fortune during his term of office, in the report of the club's meeting the name of Mr. T. W. Mavson was omitted from the list of committeemen. This member, who is one of the enthusiasts of the club and the winner of the junior championship, donated a trophy for a mid-week competition to be carried on l'rom June until November.
One of tho club's greens has been planted with n weed which is rather different from the Queenstown weed which covers the Mount Eden Club's greens. This weed, which conies from Portobello, on the Otago Peninsula, has a larger leaf than the Queenstown weed. It was procured through the energy of the club's green superintendent, Mr. J. Higginson, who was formerly a Dunedin player.
The name of Mr. W. T. Smith is missing from the list of the Epsom Club's delegates. He has occupied this position for over a score of years and was always a central figure at delegates' meetings, where he acted as one of the scrutineers. Although approached on numerous occasions to stand for a seat on the Auckland Centre executive, he always declined, preferring to devote his time in furthering liis club's interests* One instance of this is his fine work among the new players, his coaching knowledge being responsible for players adopting a good method from the very beginning. The report and 'balance-sheet to be presented at tho annual meeting of delegates to the Auckland Centre this evening shows that a very good year has been experienced. The honours in the various tournaments show that a number of clubs participated. The Grey Lynn Club is first with wins in three events. The Epsom Club had three seconds, while a win was secured in one event, tho Christmas tournament. The following clubs secured wins: Rocky Nook, Ponsonby and Edendale, while Onehunga, Rawhiti, Stanley and Hallyburton - Johnstone were run-ners-up. One new club, Auckland Transport, with a .membership of SG, was affiliated durjng the season.
On the financial side tournament entries brought in the sum of £'l2l Gs and levies on club;; £269 ]2s, but in spite of these amounts no profit accrues on the year's working. The clubs had some return, the sum of £ll7 2s being shown in the expenditure account. The entertainment of tho visitors cost £52 Is.
