SOCIALISM AND MILK
Sir, —Letters have recently appeared in the public press blaming the Auckland Milk Council for the socialistic measures it has adopted. 1 write to ask whether the term socialistic can be applied correctly to our Milk Council. The buying up of small businesses — creating a monopoly in the hands of two or three big men, who can then fix any price tliev like —is that socialism ? Personally, I cannot see much difference between the policy of the Auckland Milk Council and that of the monopolist who corners a commodity in time of scarcity. Both have the same aim, an aim which is not the public good, but the enrichment of a few. Is the Auckland public so apathetic that the council will be given a free hand? An Interested Onlooker.
