OYSTER INDUSTRY

STATE CONTROL CRITICISED HARBOUR BOARD'S ATTITUDE Criticism of Government control of the oyster beds in the Hauraki Gulf was made by the chairman, Mr. C. G. Macindoe, at a meeting of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday. Mr. Macindoe referred to the protest that had been made by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, and said that over two years ago the board had made similar representations to the Minister. Of recent years oysters in the gulf had deteriorated in quality and decreased in quantity, and it wntjd not be long before they would not be worth eating. Mr. Macindoe spoke of the success of the oyster industry in Australia, and suggested that the Government should be urged to give up control or the beds on the New Zealand coast. The cultivation of oysters by private enterprise, he contended, would result in an improvement in quality and an increase in quantity. Mr. H. Luke suggested that before the Government was asked to give up its control, the board formulate some sound scheme relating to oyster cultivation. It was agreed to set up a committee for this purpose.
