FLOODED HIGHWAYS

EAST COAST RAINS GISBORNE TRAFFIC DELAYED SLIPS ON MAIN ROADS [by telegraph—own correspondent] GISBORNE, Monday Yesterday's heavy rain in the Matawai district caused a slip on the main highway in the Waioeka Valley. The block is about 17 miles from Matawai, near the Manganuku Bridge and Cooper's station, in the same place as the one that gave trouble after last Tuesday's rain. Service cars on the Gisborne-Opotiki run arc transhipping their passengers to cars waiting on the other side of the slip. It is anticipated the road will bo open for traffic tomorrow morning. Heavy rain was reported at Ruatoria to-day, resulting in the flooding of creeks and rivers. The coast road to Ruatoria was virtually blocked this afternoon on account .of swollen streams, but it was not known whether there were any slips on the road. The morning service car reached Ruatoria but the afternoon car was unable to make the trip to Gisborne. It is expected that if the rain continues it will prevent the holding of the Rugby match to-morrow between the Taranaki and Ngatiporou Maori teams for the Tainui Cup. The Taranaki players are already at Ruatoria.

BAY or PLENTY DISTRICTS LOW-LYING AREAS INUNDATED [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE, Monday Heavy rain during the past 24 hours has resulted in the flooding of low-lying parts of the district. The main highway between Whakatane and Taneatua is impassable owing to flooding at Keegan's corner,- but traffic is boing diverted via White Pine Bush Road. Two big slips in the Waimana Gorge blocked traffic until mid-day to-day when small cars were able to proceed. It is expected that larger vehicles will get through to-night. The Wainui route to Opotiki is blocked by slips and the flooding of the river at Waiotahi is holding up traffic between Whakatane and Opotiki. The road to tho Whakatane West railway station is again under water, traffic having to proceed via Awakeri. The Whakatane River is running very high but the cessation of rain has lessened the possibility of flooding. WAIKATO CONDITIONS » GOOD GROWTH OF PASTURES [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT"!
