MENACE OF BICYCLES

PROPOSED REGULATION LOCAL BODY CONFERENCE The bicycle menace was brought before the Onehunga Borough Council last night by a letter from the Otahuhu Borough Council, requesting that dolegates be appointed to a conference at Otahuhu on July 3 to discuss the regulation of bicycle traffic. The Mayor, Mr. J. Park, said tlie matter was one of the most important exercising the minds of local authorities throughout the country. He suggested that all metropolitan and suburban traffic inspectors, with the touring manager of the Automobile Association (Auckland), should be asked to submit the basis of a uniform system of control of all classes of traffic, as he was satisfied that the majority of road users did not understand the existing regulations. Under existing conditions motorists generally were continually incurring tho risk of a manslaughter charge. It was unanimously agreed that definite action was urgently necessary, and the Mayor and Messrs. A. A. Coates and G. E. Haydon were appointed to attend the Otahuhu conference.

GREAT SOUTH ROAD TRAFFIC CYCLISTS A "PUBLIC DANGER" Support for the proposal of the Otahuhu Borough Council to arrange n conference of the southern suburban local bodies to discuss the problem of cyclo traffic on the Groat South Road was expressed at a meeting' of the Manurewa Town Board last night. The borough council invited the board to send representatives to a conference at Otahuhu on July 3. " If there is any prospect of the roads being cleared of a motorists' nightmare wo should certainly attend," said Mr. C. S. Gray. Mr. H. R. Maxwell said the local bodies ought to endeavour to control road cycling competitions. Every weekend largo groups of club cyclists raced along the Great South Road. They rodo several abreast and they were a danger to themselves and the public generally. Messrs. Gray and Maxwell were appointed to attend the conference.
