ASCOT GOLD CUP EASY WIN FOR TIBERIUS ALCAZAR FINISHES SECOND LONDON, Juno 20 The chief event at the Royal Ascot meeting to-day resulted:— ASCOT GOLD CUP, Sweepstakes of £SO each, with £3500 added, and cup valued at £500; 2i miles. TIBERIUS, Sir Abe Bailey's br hj, 4vrs, by Foxlaw—Glenabatrick, 9"0 1 ALCAZAR, W. Woodward's b hj, 4yrs, bv Achtoi —Priscilla Carter, 9.0 2 DENVER IT, M. M. Boussac's b hj, 4yrs, by Banstar —Divine, 9.0 . . 3 Six started. Eight lengths; two lengths.

Tiberius is the second winner of the Ascot Gold Cup sired by Foxlaw, who won the race himself in 1927, tho other being Eoxhunter, in 1933. Foxlaw was by Son-in-Law, who sired the 1930 winner Bosworth, and Trimdon, the latter being successful in the race both in 1931 and 1932. The Ascot Gold Cup is regarded as the greatest test of staying in England and the success of Tiberius further emphasises the value of Son-in-Law blood in a staying connection. It is also interesting in view of the fact that there are four horses by Son-in-Law at the stud in New Zealand, namely, Posterity, Philamor, Siegfried and Beau Pere. Fox bridge, who was recently acquired for the stud in the Waikato, is another from the same sire line, as lie is by Foxlaw, so that the blood is well represented in the Dominion. Tiberius failed to win at any of his five starts as a two-year-old, but, after running unplaced at his first attempt, he ran a third and three seconds, his best performance being to act as run-ner-up to Mrs. Rustom in the Dewhurst Stakes, 7 fur., at Newmarket. Last season he won four of his nine engagements and was unplaced only once. He was fourth in the Derby and was second to Windsor Lad in the St. Leger at Doncaster. Tiberius' wins included the Hastings Stakes and. the Payne Stakes, both at Newmarket, the Newmarket St. Leger and the Liverpool St. Leger. When Tiberius finished second to Windsor Lad in the St. Leger his rider, Bobby Jones, said that of his stamina there was no doubt, and this has been borne out by the horse's latest success, which appears to have been achieved with ease. Tiberius is the first foal of Glenabatrick, who was by Captain Cuttle out of Jura, by Gainsborough from Sceptre's daughter, Maid of the Mist. Glenabatrick was a product of Lord Astor's stud and was taken out of training when she injured herself in her first race as a two-year-old to bo mated the following season with Foxlaw. She was carrying Tiberius when at the December sales in 1930 she was sold for 470 guineas to Mr. J. A. Hirst. When a yearling Tiberius was offered at the first July sales, but failed to reach the reserve. He was subsequently bought by his present owner, Sir Abe Bailey.
