WORKLESS EX-SOLDIERS
"JUBILEE DRIVE" PROPOSAL ACTIVITY IN DUNEPIN Following a suggestion made in Puncdin by Mr. L. G. Lilly, president of the Imperial Ex-Servicemen's Association, that a "Jubilee drive" should he held with the object of finding work for unemployed ex-soldiers, the Punedin Chamber of Commerce has decided to call a meeting to further the proposal. At a meeting of the chamber this week the following, resolution was carried: —
"That this chamber offers its assistance to the Returned Soldiers' Association and Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League in the work they are carrying on; and that-the executive convene a meeting id' representatives of all organisations in this city who can assist in the work to consider in what way such assistance can be given." "The King has stated that it is his wish that special efforts should he made during this .Jubilee year to assist unemployed soldiers," said Mr. C. B. Barrowclough, president of the chamber. Since the Great War continuous effort had been devoted to the task of finding suitable employment for those who gave ii l> everything to fight lor their country. Notwithstanding that effort, they were faced with the fart that now, practically 17 years after the cessation of hostilities, a large number of returned men were unemployed. "It lias been suggested that the sympathetic interest of the community is beginning to wane," be added. "If so, I am of opinion that it is largely due to lack of information as to the true position. Those who have interested themselves in the repatriation of ex-ser-vicemen owe a high tribute to the response of the business community in Dunedin to their requests for assistance; and I am satisfied that that response will still be forthcoming if the need is realised."
