Saturday Diversions
Soccer and Rugby Dear Editor, — My occupation on fine Saturday afternoons in winter is to journey into Devonport to the recreation ground to watch with keen interest the exciting Soccer and Rugby matches. I am a keen follower of both games. As I always do the errands and gardening jobs on Saturday morning 3 am at liberty in the afternoons to pursue my hobbies. On wet Saturday afternoons 1 amuse myself by making models in Meccano, while the radio sends a relay from one of the football grounds. Meccano is a great help toward engineering. On Saturdsy afternoons in summer mv leisure time is spent in swimming nnd walking round to Taharoto Park to watch cricket matches. I am very keen on cricket myself and have played for my school for one and a-half seasons, our team winning the North Shore and All-Auckland championships. We!!, thus end my Saturday afternoons, both in summer and winter.—Yours faithfully. Warren N. Leonard, 14 Napier Avenue, Takapuna (age 11).
Over the Hills Dear Editor, — On Saturday afternoons I go shooting over the hills. Sometimes I go to the pictures, if 1 know I shall enjoy it. but usually I go rambling over the hills looking for rabbit holes and digging them out of their nests. I take my rifle and terrier and go out and try and shoot the hawks which are flying around. Milking soon comes, for time flies when one is having an interesting time. Slowly I come down from the hills, then round up the milking cows (that's if nobody is in sight or eetting them in). Getting the cows in generally requires a dog of some sort to bring them up to the shed. When they are in the yard they fight and bunt one another around and it generally upsets the other cows. I put them in the bails and leg-rope and wash them, then I help to milk tbem. After ! have finished milking I generally go up the hills again shooting, but it is dark new when the milking is over. —John Slade-Gully.
