The Orphan
By GLORIA RAWLINSON
Other little chickens hare nice fafc mothers, Warm mothers—neat and prim; This little chicken was incubated And nobody cared about him. Other little chickens have big, proud fathers To scare cats and puppies away This little chicken had to fight' hia own battles All the livelong day. Other little chickens get toothsome tit-bits — Worms, baby crickets and wheat* This little chicken was always hungry And never had enough to eat! Other little chickens have their lessons daily, And learn their A.B.C.'s, But just because he was incubated This little chicken was uneducated And never even learned to say " please." Other little chickens 'have small, soft feathers, Other little chickens do; This little chicken was almost- naked, On his wings he'd only two! Other little chickens are often snobbish And inherit their father's pride; This little chicken was just a humble orphan, And nobody missed him when he died.
