BELOVED BISHOP

JUBILEE DAY CELEBRATIONS The seventy-seven-year-old Bishop of London will celebrnte the jubilee of his priesthood on June 25. On his jubilee day he will sit alone before the chancel steps of St. Paul's Cathedral for nearly sixteen hours receiving gifts from the peoplo of his diocese. Money so collected will bo used toward a £IOO,OOO fund needed for forty new parishes that have sprung up in London's suburbs. At the end of his long day the bishop will conduct a fifteenminute thanksgiving service. There will be a strangely varied procession to the chancel steps During the day, without ceremony, small children will come with pennies, poor people with their tribute of a few coppers, and then —ceremoniously—the Lord Lieutenant of Middlesex, the representative of the Lord Mayor of London, masters of the great City companies and other dignitaries. The Lord Mayor's representative will arrive in a semi-stato coach. Guards of honour of tho Church Lad's Brigade and Boy Scouts will await him at the cathedral. During three short intervals, when the bishop will leave his seat for meals, his place will be taken by one of the Suffragan Bishops of Kensington, Stepney, or Willesden. Thirty-four years ago, when Dr. Winnington Ingram became Bishop of London, the population of the diocese was 3,558,624. To-day it is 4,025,247. In those thirty-four years sixty new churches have been built and consecrated in his see, 2235 men have beeti ordained for work there, and 546,000 persons have been confirmed.
