NORTHCOTE CHURCH

OLDEST ON NORTH SHORE FOUNDED by bishop selwyn The patronal festival of St. John the Baptist Church at Northcote is to be celebrated to-morrow. This is the.oldest church on the northern side of the harbour, h ay i n K been planned, built and dedicated by Bishop Selwyn in 1859 The parish originally comprised the whole area on the northern side of the harbour, and extended nearly to Whangarei. The Northcote parish has been reduced in area by the formation of others at Devonport, Takapuna and Birkenhead, and now consists of Northcote, Glenfield and Albany. , On St. John's Day, 76 years ago, Bishop Selwyn was rowed across the harbour for the consecration ceremony, landing at Goldhole Beach. The transept to the. church was dedicated by Bishop Cowie in 1882, when the Rev. F. G. Evans (afterwards archdeacon) was the vicar. The bell and portion of the ground behind the church were given by Mr. James Faulkner, who died recently. Probably the only person now living who attended the dedication ceremony in 1859 is Mr. Isaac H. Creamer, of Remuera, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Creamer, then lived at Northcote, and he has intimated to the vicar, the Rev. H. „L. I?. Isherwood, that he will attend to-morrow's services. Archdeacon Mac Murray will be the preacher ih the morning, and a confirmation service will be conducted by Bishop Averill in the evening. The offertories to-morrow will mark the first test of the experiment of banishing bazaara for raising church •finance in favour of direct giving, and the patronal festival has been set apart for these freewill offerings.
