HIGHER TAXES
MR. ROOSEVELT'S PLAN MESSAGE TO CONGRESS "WASHINGTON, June ;19 President Roosevelt has asked Congress for a general increase in taxes, particularly oxj the higher levies. Hits special message, which arrived to-day from White House, was a surprise to all the members, except the leaders. It advocated increased rates on very large personal incomes, imposts on higher inheritances and gifts, and a higher schedule for corporate income taxes.
The message also referred to the disturbing effects upon American national life that come from great inheritances of wealth and power, and proposed a study for the elimination of unnecessary holding companies in all lines of business. , >
Mr. R. L. Doughton, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives, commented: " As I understand it, this is just a suggestion for the future to our committee. We cannot do anything about it now, as our hands are full." '
