PUKEKOHE BOROUGH
"LOWER RATES IMPOSSIBLE .' [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Thursday The opinion that a reduction in the rates levied by the Pukekohe Borough Council seemed impossible was expressed by the Mayor, Mr. C. K. Lawrie, at the council meeting last evening. Mr. Laurie reported that ho had reviewed the borough finances over the past five years and that if the present standard of maintenance was to bo continued the same amount of revenue would have to be collected from the ratepayers. A request from the Pukekohe Rugby Union that the percentage taken bv the borough from the gate-takings at Uledisloe Park should be reduced ffom 20 to 10 was referred to the Finance Committee. The union stated that it appeared certain that a heavy loss would bo incurred this season. It was decided to convey thanks to the former Mayor, Mr. J. Routly, for his work in connection with the provision of headstones for unnamed graves in the cemetery. The clerk, Mr. S. Bish, was instructed to submit estimates for the current year to the Finance Committee for report to the council. A request for metal to be applied to Wesley Street, an unformed road which was dedicated by the council soma years ago, was referred to the Works Committee for a report.
