RANGITOTO ISLAND
fr£e use by public BOTANISTS' CLAIMS "CONTESTED "Tho Rangitoto Domain Board is actuated only by a desire to protect the island for the general public," said Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, Mayor of Devon port and chairman of the Domain Board, speaking at the annual meeting of the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association last night. "1 know there is a move in a certain quarter to close the island to shackholders, and perhaps eventually to the general public entirely," he said. "I resent it, from the point of view of the interests of the whole area, for which the Domain Board is controlling the island. Actually, so far from making any money from at, the lie von port Borough Council is owed £SOO by the Domain Board. Any money received from shacks goes back to Rangitoto, and is utilised in keeping the island in good order. "Rangitoto Island is well roaded, and we should be sorry to see it shut up for merely botanical interests," Mr. Meikle added. "The botanists are already catered for by Little Barrier Island. However, th»» Domain Board is fully alive to the interests of botany."
