EXHIBITION BUILDING
"ERECTION A NECESSITY" TIME NOW OPPORTUNE The opinion that the erection of a suitable exhibition building in Auckland was a necessity and should be considered by citizens without delay was expressed by Mr. J. A. C. Allum at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The subject arose during the discussion on a circular from the Unemployment Board asking for information relating to the probable building activities of public and semi-public bodies during the next two years: In the circular, which has already been published, the commissioner said it would be appreciated that all building operations had a far-reaching effect in providing employment, and the board would be grateful for any detailed information which could be furnished. It would then be able to gauge the extent of employment likely to be created. The president of the chamber, Mr. Gainor Jackson, said that if i£ was intended, as a-result of the replies the board received, to subsidise work undertaken by non-profit-earning institutions there were prospects of- much work being provided. It was suggested that consideration might be given to building now quarters for the chamber. Mr. A. G. Lunn moved that a reply should be sent to the board to the effect that full publicity would be given to the circular. In adopting a policy of long-term planning the board was now doing what the chamber had advocated for years. Mr. Allum said he thought a copy should be sent to tho Auckland Manufacturers' Association, as ho considered an exhibition building was urgently needed in the city. Now was their opportunity. "If we send n copy to the manufacturers and say we will join with the farmers we might get something done," said Mr. Allum. ' Mr. Lunn's motion was carried.
