DUEL IN HUNGARY
COMBATANTS WOUNDED THE PREMIER INVOLVED (Received June 9, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. June 8
Despatches from Budapest state that the Premier of Hungary, General Goemboes, last week was challenged to a duel by an Opposition deputy, Dr. Eckhardt, following an allegation that General Goemboes had provided information which had been the subject of a previous quarrel between Dr. Eckhardt and the former Premier, Count Bethlen.
Subsequently General Goemboes and Dr. Eckhardt settled their quarrel without a duel, but this only precipitated another duel and threatens a third. Dr. Eckhardt to-day fought a Government deputy named Szalay, with light cavalry sabres. Each was wounded 10 times, and then desisted from sheer exhaustion.
General Goemboes had earlier appeased Dr. Eckhardt by saying that Count Bethlen had misquoted him. The latter thereupon sent his seconds to General Goemboes. The Daily Mail's Budapest correspondent states that General Goemboes, contrary to expectations, admitted a misunderstanding with Dr. Eckhardt and Count Bethlen accepted the explanation, thus obviating the threatened duel.
