SUCCESS OF CLAN RONALD TRAVELLING AGENT'S WIN PRINCESS STAR SCORES By ARCHER The each-way favourite Clan Ronald scored a convincing win in the Maniapoto Hack Steeplechase, leading throughout. Clan Ronald and Semiarch were the leaders over the first two fences, and at the double Clan Ronald led from St. Ames, Semiarch, Magic Land, Silver Division and Haakon. The field was strung out along tho back and Clan Ronald was just clear of St. Ames, with Silver Division, Semiarch and Kilstar following. Clan Ronald jumped tho last fence in good style, and went on to win by three lengths from St. Ames, with Haakon finishing on a length away third. Ardmanning was fourth, followed by Semiarch, Magic Land and Silver Division.

Clan Ronald gave » fine exhibition of fencing, and was always travelling like a winner. St. Ames made a very creditable showing, and he also jumped rather well, although he hit a couple of fences fairly hard. Haakon made up a lot of ground in the last hall-mile, and was staying on soundly at the end. It was his first race for some months, aud he should be improved by the outing. On the strength of his good win on the first day Kahapa was installed an eachway favourite for the first division of tho Hangatiki Hack Handicap, and he duly won. Kahapa was first to move from No. 1, but Landlubber soon ran to the front from Salesman, Orac. Roman Mascot, Kahapa and Adalene. Salesman and Landlubber weie almost in line next, closely followed by Valueless, Roman Mascot, British Jewel and Wahineroa.

Grocd Hurdles Contest

Kahapa was responsible for a pleasing performance. He lost his position crossing the top, but came on the outside with an irresistible run at * thf finish, and was going away right on tht po3t. Adalene, Orac, Landlubber and Salesman had a great tussle for second and Adalene stayed best to just<" gsiin the honour. Roman Mascot had very chance bt.t could make no impression at the finish. The improving Travelling Agent finished in good style to take the Piopio Hurdles at doublei flgureb on the straight-out machine. King Wii led over the first fence from Booklaw and Imperial Prince. King Win, Val Watch and Booklaw were almost abreast in the lead passing the stands from King's Archer, Travelling Agent, Chang and Biform. Booklaw and Val Watch carried on the running along the back, and they were still in change crossing the top, where Chang and Stanchion moved up. Val Watch and Stanchion showed the way into the straight to Chang Biform, Booklaw, and Travelling Agent who were in close order. Stanchion was in front at the last fence, where Travelling Agent and Biform challenged. Travelling Agent did best in the run home- and won bv a length and a-half from Biform, with Stanchion a similar distance away third Booklaw was fourth, followed by Black Marlin. Chang. King Win, Val Watch and Sir Musk. Travelling Agent's win was impressive and he is an improver who should do still better Biform was also staying on soundly at the end. He should be benefited by his racing. Stanchion made his run ra 'her early very shatply. and had his effort been delayed a trifle longer he might have been more troublesome Booklaw niade a solid showing, but Val Watch and Chang both weakened near the end. Brilliant Finishing Bun

It was with a brilliant finishing effort that Silver Brier won the second division of the Hangatiki Ha-k Handicap to return double figures for a win. Grand Score. High Tea. Gloucester and Gay Egypt were smartest to begin. Grand Score and Gloucester streaking away across the top to lead into the straight clear of Solomon, Mungaore, Wahine Rcihi and Gay Egypt. The each-way favourite High Tea lost his position quickly after jumping out well, and was never prominent afterwards The light-weight T.vbalt finished well to take the Waitomo Handicap The was a trifle uneven Arawa Rose hanging at the rise of the harrier. Scotland was first n way from the outside and strung the field out alonfe the hack, where Wait and See. Sinking Fund. Engi. Delrain and Lord Val were his closest attendants. Scotland continued to make play acrosß the ton, and le<l into the straight from Wait and See. Engi Lord Vnl. Delrain and Tybalt Engi. Tvbalt finished very resolutely and just outstayed Enori. who appeared likely to win nt the distance. Musquil came home solidlv on tl)e outside and returned a good nr'ce for third. Mercian Prince was very hadlv placed early, and might have been closer only for being checked whe? making his run in the straight. Gay Rose .was never sighted, and Scotland stopped ouickly near the end. Arawa Rose went well and would have been more prominent if she had lumped out better. Only two of the six runners. completed the course safely in the Kawhia Steeplechase. and victor/ went to the each-way favourite Riotous, who was always in or near the front Royal Limond attempted to go with Riotous over the last four fences, but each time he was outjumped and was beaten by two Mia Stella and Valpeen were not far behind Riotous and Royal Limond when they fell at the second to last feme, but they appeared to be tiring. Silver Division was pulled up when hopelessly tailed off at this stage and Ruby Meteor had fallen at the fence near the sevr'i furlongs nost in the first round. Mia Stella and Valpeen careered back into the biiccage. and they were quickly mounted by other' ridel's to go in search of third money. Valpeen, with his owner in the saddle, was quick to go back and over the last fence, and hewent past the post to be duly placed third. Meantime the rider of Silver Division realised what was happening, and he set off down the straight toward the second to lust fence, whirl fie had missed, but, it was too late, and Silver Division was brought back to the enclosure. King Ford was just in front entering the straight from Princess Star, Gay Seton. Hampton Park and Star Artist. Princess Star was in command inside the distance and stalled off a challenge from Gay Seton to score by a length. Orapai finished fast to get third, a neck away, and King Ford was fourth, with British Columbia and Exaggeration next. Princess Star again demonstrated her liking for heavy going. She was always handily placed and ran on with plenty of determination when the pressure was applied Gay had every chance, but the winner was too good for him at the weights and unde/ the conditions. Orapai was last until reaching the straight, and put in a, brilliant run at the finish. The others were all wel' beaten. . The each-way favourite Green Patch missed a place in the Farewell Hack Handicap, wlrch Lady Zinni.. won at double-figures odds.
