Sir, —I see in the Herald a complaint re transport of parcels to Leigh, it is time tho carrying business was overhauled in this part of the world. The position as pointed out by your correspondent "J.T." is certainly absurd. Why does the Transport Board grant these monopolies? In my case I have some perishable goods for delivery from Auckland. I am informed by tho local carrier who has been given the licence to do the carrying for this district that it is not possible to bring the goods, as it would take him out of his road (yet goods were handy to ferry or could be left at a depot). Four or five times they were left behind without any reason being given, involving a dead loss. I am informed on inquiring that I had better get another carrier (but am not told who). In my opinion, if all competition is to be kept off the road by the board, then it should make it a condition of the licence that these men should run to a definite time-table—-so many times a week—and have a .definite route, similar to the passenger buses. If they are allowed to run all over the place at any old time to suit themselves, then so long will the public be at their, mercy f and so long will the carrier be able to pick the plums and leave the less payable jobs to someone else.
