BUILDING SOCIETY FUNDS LARGE AMOUNT AVAILABLE The large amount of money in the hands of building societies in New Zealand available for investment when there was a demand was referred to by Mr. E. EL S. Hamilton, chairman of directors of the United Building Society, Christchurch, in his address to the shareholders at the annual meeting. The demand for loans from societies had dropped in recent years, he said, but if the demand arose the societies could advance big sums without difficulty. "At a time when the mortgage business is so much under discussion it is not out of place, I think, to make a reference to the part played by the building societies of New Zealand in the provision of facilities for the purchase of homes," said Mr. Hamilton. "There are in existence 97 societies, of which 53 are permanent societies and 44 are terminating societies. " In recent years the conditions in the country have affected the demand for money, and the number of loans granted each year has been dropping, the total for the year ended March 31, 1934, being 1139 advances, amounting to £593.360, compared with 1639, amounting to £804,452, in the previous year. The statistics in the latest year book show that the building societies could advance a large amount without difficulty if there .were a demand."
