FATALLY SHOT
TRAGEDY ON AORANGI ASSISTANT PURSER'S FATE (Received May 23, 7.45 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 23 A tragic occurrence on the steamer Aorangi is reported. The assistant purser of the vessel, a New Zealander, Mr. John Morris Breen, was found shot dead in his bunk. He was wearing evening dress. An automatic revolver was found at his side. Detectives found nothing to indicate foul play. Mr. Breen, who was popular among his shipmates, was seen on the vessel about 1 p.m. yesterday, after which hour his movements are obscure. A steward entered the cabin to-day and discovered the body. Death had occurred several hours previously.
Mr. Breen, whose home was in Wellington, joined the Union Company several years ago. He had office experience before going to sea, and had been an assistant purser on the Aorangi for about 18 months. He was about 2-1 years old.
