CONTESTS IN COUNTRY

PONSONBY TEAM'S WIN VICTORY OVER MATAMATA Rugby football competitions were continued in the various country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. An interesting match was played at Matamata, where the Ponsonby senior team from Auckland defeated the local representatives. The following results of matches were forwarded by correspondents of the Herald: — Matamata.—A large attendance at Bedford Park witnessed Ponsonby beat the Matamata representatives by 21 points_ to 11. The visitors made the game open right from the start, and held a decided advantage in scrums and line-outs. A weakness at the base of the scrum in the home team further assisted the visitors. In spite of the above handicaps, Matamata should have crossed their opponents' line on at least three occasions, for half a dozen good chances were lost by players failing to take passes only yards out, or by passes falling inches short. Jamieson, Hay, Ramsay and Pearman were the pick of the visitors' backs, and Bond, M. Fraser and Solomon, who did not always extend himself, the best of the forwards. W. H. Carlson enhanced his reputation as an attacking player, and with Swap. Carroll and Cole, stood out among the home backs, while Delaney, who compared favourably with any forward on the field, and Malligan, Barbalich, Warrender and Halford were the best of the Matamata pack. The Ponsonby team was rearranged after the interval. Dye and Carter took ti;t> places of Knight and Ramsay, and Gooch replaced Moses, who injured his shoulder. Solomon, Moses, Jamieson, Gooch and Fraser scored tries for Ponsonby, Jamieson converting three. Munro scored for Mnfarrata. Carroll converting, and also kicking two penalty goals.
