THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE DEMAND FOR BANKS The week opened well on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, a fair amount of business being; transacted. There wns a, good inquiry for banks, which changed hands freely, but some industrials which had sirong buying support i»t the end of last week 'were a shade easier. Oilers for Government loans were firmer, particularly for 4 per cent bonds, the J955 issue gaining 15s. No business was done in this section. The majority of banks were sought at improved levels, but sale prices generally were lower. The preference issue of Commercials of Australia was released at 4s lower at £9 13s, while Nationals oi Australasia were 4s 6d lower in business at £l2 13s 6d. An easing of 6d' occurred in Reserve Banks, which were done at £6 13s. New South "Wales gained 17s 6d to sell at £3l. Sales at ruling levels were made _in Nationals ol: New Zealand and New Zeaiands, but the D mortgage issue was traded 3d easier at 33s 9d. No sales occurred in insurance shares. Robinson Ice Creams showed further appreciation, a sale at 25:3 6d being 2s IOJd higher than the lasit transaction in February. A sharp rise occurred in Consolidated Bricks, which were taken Is 3d better at 8s 3d. Auckland Gas were.obtained 2d lower at 28s Id, but subsequently improved to 28s 2d. Dun-lop-Perdriaus were transferred 4d easier at 16= lid, and two parcels of Farmers' Tradings changed hands Id lower lit 7s lid. Transactions at unchanged prices were recorded in Renown Collieries (preference), Morris Hedstroms and Woolworths (N.Z.).

FRUIT IN LONDON INCREASED CONSUMPTION LONDON. May 11 The Silver Jubilee celebrations and the influx of hundreds of thousands of visitors to Ixindon stimulated the demand for' apples and pears, the consumption of which this week has been very great. So that, although supplies have beep heavy, prices have kept steady. As. lighter quantities are arriving in the near future, importers are hopeful that the present prices will be maintained, if not improved.
