WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

BRANCH MEETINGS Aranga. —The third annual meeting of the institute was held recently in the form of a social evening. Dancing and musical items were enjoyed. Dargaville.—At the annual meeting, the retiring president, Mrs. Crump, was presented with a beautiful silver eake dish from members in appreciation of her services. A flower show by members was very successful, and showed some splendid results by the gardening circle. Donnelly's Crossing.—A demonstration of pen painting was. given by Miss M. Hemmins, and the roll call was " What is your happiest hour in the week."

Horotiu.—At the monthly meeting of the institute, Mrs. White presided. Mrs. Young of the Gordonton Institute, gave an interesting demonstration of making pine-needle baskets. An item was rendered by Mrs. Fuller, of the Ngaruawahia Institute. The competition was for a plate of plain scones, and from a large number of entries judged by Mrs. Fuller, of Ngaruawahia, Mrs. Hyde gained first place and Mrs. McCarthy second. An entertainment committee for the ensuing year was elected as follows: —Mesdames Iremonger, Hyde, Goodaere, Martin, Moynihan, McCarthy, Paddy, Toulson, and Rogers, and the Misses Lawson, E. Hall, M. Booth, Hooker, E. Spiers, E. Starr. H. Hardley and V. Hall. Mrs. Martin was elected pianist, and Mrs. Rogers press reporter. Kaikohe. —The institute held its first anniversary party recently. Competitions, musical items and a play-read-ing were enjoyed. The guests included Mrs. A. O. Brown, president of the Whangarei Federation, and Miss Dorehill, of Maunu.

Kirikopuni.—A competition for an article made from old stockings was won by Miss Butter, first, Mrs. Bate, second. Programmes for the next six months were also made out.

Kaihu. —At the annual l meeting a sugar mat competition was held, Mrs. E. Simmons being first, Mrs. Nathan, second. A demonstration of moccasin making was given by Mrs. Clayton.

Manawahe.—The institute met recently when amendments to remits to bo presented to the council meeting were discussed. Mrs. Stowers read a story written by herself, and a competition was won by Mrs. Logan. Tea hostesses were Mrs. Macpherson and Mrs. L. Rendall.

Mamaranui.—The monthly meeting was held at the residence of Mrs. Haines. A programme of work for the year was drawn up, and competitions held. Mrs. Newlove was the winner of a flower competition, with Mrs. Haines second. She was also the winner of a passe partout picture frame with Miss Righton second.

Omana. —Many visitors were present at the third anniversary party, including of the Mangarata Institute. Musical items were enjoyed, and a competition was won by Miss G. Bramble. A * treasure hunt was also held.

Ohakune.—At a meeting of the Ohakune Institute, Mrs. Ellery was appointed secretary in place of Mrs. Martin. and Mrs. Carmine was elected delegate to the Dominion conference. A demonstration of lampshade making was given by Mrs. Carmine. Hostesses were Mesdames Brown, Watt and Bowie. Competitions winners were Mesdames Kearns, Lynch, Hancox, Lane, Millard and Boswell.

Ruawai. —Mrs. Westbrooke presided over a large gathering of members. Community singing was enjoyed, and Mrs. W. Shepplierd demonstrated papier mache work. A competition for the best candlestick mado from waste paper material was won by Mrs.. Sheppherd.

Titirangi.—There was a large attendance at the monthly meeting, which was held at the residence of Mrs. George Morris, Park Road. A lecturette, demonstrating the uses of a hay box for (ireless cooking, was given by Mrs. Rennie, president. The roll call " Impromptu Speeches," was much enjoyed, and a bring and buy table added to the building fund. An increased membership accentuates the institute's pressing need of acquiring a permanent room. The hostesses were Mesdames W. A. Bishop. T. A. Bishop and M. Crochett.

Wardville. —At a recent meeting a demonstration of art silk painting was given by Mrs. Arbuckle. An account of the Waikato group meeting was given by Mrs. J. Barker. Hostesses were Mrs. C. D. Barker and Mrs. J. Barker.

fe Kopuru.—Competitions were held, one for the best home-made mop, being won by Mrs. Fernandez, Mrs. H. Savident being second. Another for the best home-made candlestick was won by Mrs. Dix.

Tangiteroria.—The points prize for the year was .won by Mrs. Hamlin, first, Mrs. Allen being second, Mrs. Mackey third. Competitions for scones, a sponge and a madeira cake were judged by Mrs. W. A. Mansell. Mrs. Hamlin being first.
