OTAMATEA COUNTY ROADS

TENDERS FOR METALLING RIVER WILLOW CLEARANCE [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] PAPAROA, Fridny The following tenders were accepted at a meeting of the Otamatea County Council to-day:—Otamatea Road, metalling, W. A. Judd and S. Carrick, £214; Brvnderwyn Road, Maungaturoto, metalling, J. Hammond, £100; Taipuha Station Road, Mareretu, metalling, P. C. Taylor, £3B; Ruawai creamery, Awaroa to Armstrong's Corner, metalling, J. Hammond, £195.

A letter was received from the Unemployment Board in reply to the council's request for assistance in repairing the damage caused by the recent floods. Members said the conditions laid down made the board's offer useless and it was resolved to make further application to the Government for assistance.

Reporting on willow clearing in the river, the engineer said the trouble was partly due to congestion of flood waters at one point, caused by the steep river banks rendering the channel incapable of coping with the flow in flood times. The approximate cost of clearing the willows and widening the stream in the Mareretu riding alone was £4625. Correspondence was received from the Hobson and Whangarei County Councils on the menace of willows in the same river through their areas. The council decided that a conference of representatives of all three councils was necessary to determine the course of action. The chairman, Mr. R. Coates, and Messrs. Davidson, Dcdds, Betts and Thompson were appointed to represent the Otamatea County.
