May 1 After a trial which had lasted nearly two years, and in the course of which 500 witnesses were examined, 31 men were convicted by a special tribunal at Calcutta on a charge of conspiracy to wage war against the King. Six of the accused were sentenced to transportation for life, three to 10 years' imprisonment, nine to seven years, and the remainder to terms ranging from six years to one year. Four men were acquitted, but two of them were re-arrested immediately under the Criminal Law Amendment Act, and two who turned King's evidence were pardoned.
