SHOOTING SEASON
GOOD SPORT IN NORTH PHEASANTS VERY PLENTIFUL Although for many the opening days of the shooting season have been somewhat disappointing, the sport, generally speaking, has been good, and a number of limit bags has been obtained. Sportsmen in North Auckland are well satisfied with their, bags. Five out of seven sportsmen in one area obtained the limit in pheasants, which are exceptionally numerous in many localities. Duck shooting results were not as satisfactory yesterday as on the opening day, although good bags were obtained. Excellent sport attended the opening of the season in the Te Kuiti district. Contrary to expectations, good sport was received with the ducks, the bags of one or two sportsmen approaching the limit. In the Franklin and Rangiriri districts ducks aro very plentiful, and some fine bags have been secured. Limit bags were shot yesterday by Mr. T. Overton, of Hawera, Mr. Chamberlain, of Papakura, and Mr. Bates, of Auckland.
The season opened disappointingly for the majority of sportsmen in the Whakatane district, ducks in particular being scarce. The long spell of wet weather experienced recently has provided ducks with abundant feed away from their usual haunts, and on the opening day even the* sanctuary at Matata was not made uso of. Several limit bags were taken in the vicinity of Te Teko, however, and pheasants ■>cre plentiful in some areas. Pheasants are more plentiful in the Taurnnga district than they have been for years, while quail, too, are numerous.
