HISTORICAL ROMANCE

ATTRACTION FOR PLAZA

The fiirr,; "Nell Gwyn," which will open its Auckland season at the Plaza Theatre to-day, is another, and perhaps the best, of the historical romances which have become so popular in the last two years. While credit must be given to the producers for the way in which dramatic unity and easy movement have been maintained, the chief factor making for the success the film has enjoyed in other countries is the generous imagination brought to bear, and the correct emphasis laid upon their parts by the principal artists. Anna Neagle, as "sweet Nell." has all the quick and impudent. Cockney wit which first attracted Charles' fancy and thd natural grace and charm which perpetuated one of the most famous romances of all time. Sir Cecil Hardwickc, as the merry monarch, solves the problem which has baffled so many stage actors in correctly blending all the many aspects of the king's character, the base and noble, the vicious and lovable. These two notable principals are admirably supported by a fine cast of minor players, particularly Jeanne do Casalis and Ksme Percy. The film is true to its period and the incidental music for Nell's dances i 8 by Sir Edward German. There will be some very interesting supporting films.
