MANOEUVRES NEAR ALBANY

DEFENCE OF COMMUNICATIONS

About 200 men will participate in the manoeuvres to be carried out near Albany to-day by the First Battalion, North Auckland Regiment, which is at present in camp at Narrow Neck. The manoeuvres were to have been held yesterday, but were postponed owing to inclement weather. ' The battalion will undertake a tactical scheme of the defence of the line of communications over the Albany and Silverdale area in the morning. The regiment will leave the camp at. 8..30 a.m. and will proceed to Albany by motor transport. Two companies of infantry and three platoons of ma eh rie guns will defend the communications, which cover about nine miles. The "enemy" will attack the "defenclerfi." using armoured cars and troop waggons. In the afternoon, the regiment will move to another sector of the district to defend a supply refilling point. The object of the "enemy" is to disorganise the supply station and interrupt the food supplies and transport arrangements. The "enemy" will act as a mobile force and will have the use of mechanised transport as their objective will be to launch a surprise attack. The manoeuvres are expected to occupy the entire day. The regiment will be under the command of Lieuten-ant-Colonel C. S. White, with Lieutenant G. H. Wooller, N.Z.S.C., as adjutant. The brigade-major of the First New Zealand Infantry Brigade, Major H. D. McHugh, N.Z.S.C., also will be present at the manoeuvres. TAKAPUNA GRAMMAR SOHOOIi THREE DAYS' INSTRUCTION A three days' military barracks was commenced by the Takapuma Grammar School cadets on Wednesday. The artillery company is undergoing a course in gun and foot drill, while the senior infantry companies are being given instruction in defence and ceremonial drill. The junior section of the infantry is having a course in foot drill and small arms training. The machinegun section and the newly-formed ambulance section are training at the school, while certain other sections are working at the Narrow Neck Camp.
