RATEPAYERS COMPLAIN

BOARD UNABLE TO ACT NO CONTROL OF FOOTPATH The unusual position of a local body having to refer complaints from its ratepayers to another local authority was disclosed at the Ellerslie Town Board meeting last night. The chairman, Mr H. J. White, said there had been complaints regarding the condition of the footpath on the Great South Road. The complainants were ratepayers in the Ellerslie town district, bub the roadway fronting their properties and used by them was vested for control and maintenance in the One Iree Hill Borough Council. Tho town clerk, Mr. J. W. Carr, said the Ellerslie Town Board formerly was responsible for the portion of road referred to. It was still paying over £SOO a year as interest and sinking fund payments in respect of work carried out there on loan money. The annual rate revenue from that part of the district was about £3BO, but out of that sum had to be met a portion of the Hospital Board levy, street lighting and other charges. It was decided, to submit the complaints to the One Tree Hill Borough Council with a request for attention.
