AMATEUR ATHLETICS

TRACK SEASON CONCLUDED ANNUAL UNIVERSITY TOURNEY OTAGO CHAMPION PROVINCE The conclusion of what has been Auckland's most successful athletic season for over 30 years was reached during the Easter week-end, when open meetings were conducted at Cambridge, Dargaville and Howick, while the New Zealand University championships were decided at Duncdin. Teams of Aucklanders competed successfully at all these meetings: The Aucklanders did not faro quite as successfully at Dunedin as was anticipated, but, nevertheless, were prominent in most events. The biggest surprise was the defeat of P. Hackett in the high jump. He cleared only sft. Sins. and was forced to third place by Macintosh, of Victoria College,» and Borrie, of Otago University. Hackett made amends, however, by winning the long jump with a leap of 20ft. 2ins. J. B. Prendergast filled second place in this event with 19ft. Oiins., and then won the hop, step and jump with 43ft. 9ins. A. T. Anderson, of Canterbury University, was responsible for a fine performance in the 220 yards and 440 yards hurdle events by winning both easily in the fast times of 26 2-5 seconds and 56 2-5 seconds respectively, the latter time equalling his own university record. Next to Finlayson, he is undoubtedly the best man over these distances in the Dominion. In the 440 yards hurdles D. Ball, the Aucklander, came in third after running a good race. The other Aucklanders failed to gain places in the flat events in which Otago almost scooped the pool. Hie latter finally won the Athletic Shield with 22 points from Canterbury with 19 points. t In a few weeks now the winter crosscountry season will be in full swing. It is probable that a strong representative team will bo found for the New Zealand championship, to be held this year at Wellington, and there is every prospect that the Harrier Shield will come to Auckland after an absence of nine years. The prospect of an Australian tour will also prove an incentive

to the leading many of whom have already commenced long training work. The season has already opened in Cliristchurch. A combined club run of about 10 miles was held around the Cashmere Hills.
