PERRY'S FUTURE

RETENTION OF STATUS TEMPTING PICTURE OFFER (Received April 21, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK. April 20 The British tennis champion, Fred Perry, arrived in. New York from California to-day and a few hours later sailed for England by the Berengaria. In an interview Perry said he expected to play in important tournaments in England in the coming season, starting in the Bournemouth hard courts championship on April 29. "This is silver jubilee year arid I shall do what I can to win the Davis Cup for King George and England for another year," said Perry. "I am entirely at the disposal of the British Lawn Tennis Association. Of course, they may say they do not want me, but until they do I am going to remain an amateur." As to his engagement to Miss Mary Lawsop, Perry said: " That is off, but i am going to tell Miss Lawson as soon as I reach home of my movie offer, and professionalism, which might have meant 100,000 dollars to me. " Actually I almost signed a picture contract. All I had to do was to put my name on a dotted line and collect, but I could not do it. I went to bed

some nights determined to get up in the morning and sign, but much as I need the money I could never quite put myself to it. " I do not want to be a professional. I knew that if I turned professional there was no question that the Davis Cup would have gone from England and we waited too long to got it to give it up so soon. I think it is my duty as an Englishman to help to defend it again."
