ITALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS HOPMAN DEFEATED (Received April 21, 5.5 p.m.) ROME, April 20 In the Italian tennis championships Canepele, a -young Italian, . defeated Hopman (Australia), 6—4, 4 —6, 6 —3, 3—6, 6—3; Brugnon beat Goldschmidt, 6 —2, 6 —2. In the men's doubles, Hopman and Palada defeated Sabbadini and Deminerbi, 6 —3, 6—4, o—6, 6—3. Crawford, McGrath, Turnbull and Quist were each successful in the mixed doubles. The Australian Davis Cup players are to play at Monte Carlo on April 26 and 30. From there they will go direct to Eastbourne for the cup tie against New Zealand.
