YOUTH SEVERELY BURNED
SPLASHED WITH BITUMEN CONDITION REPORTED SERIOUS Severe burns to the neck, arms, ■ legs and body were received yesterday afternoon by an apprentice, Henry John Marshall, aged 17, when he tripped while carrying a tin of boiling bitumen at the yardof Charles Bailey and Son, Limited, boat builders, in Beaumont Street, Freeman's Bay. The youth, who lives at 20 Willow Street, Freeman's Bay, was taken to the Auckland Hospital in a St. John ambulance.
Bitumen had been heated in the yard, and Marshall was carrying about two gallons of the boiling fluid in a when he tripped and fe]l. The tin was capsized, and its contents spilled, a quantity of the bitumen splashing over the youth, who was lightly clad. Suffering considerable pain, the yeuth lifted himself to his feet, and before his fellow workers could lend assistance he ran across the yard and plunged into the sea. He was quickly brought ashore and taken to hospital in an ambulance. His condition last night was serious.
