Miss Violet Roche leaves Auckland to-day by the Niagara on her return to Sydney after an extended overseas tour.

In appreciation for the services they have rendered as librarians for the past 21 years, a public social evening was given in the Taupiri Hall for Mr. and Mrs. T. T. White. On behalf of the residents of the district, Mr. W. A. Lovell presented Mrs. White with'an illyminated address and Mr. White with a well filled wallet.

At a meeting of the Ladies' Gardening Club of Whangarei Mrs. W. A. Given gave instructive information on the cultivation of dahlias, and displayed many excellent blooms sent by Miss Clark Walker, Mr. A. Englund, and Mrs. Andrews (Avondaie). A feature of the address was the arrangement of the exhibits for different colour schemes and explanations for such arrangements.

A social and gift evening was tendered to Miss P. McWatt and Mr. H. Coles in the Waimauku Hall on Saturday. Items were given by Mrs. T. Chaplin" and Mrs. J. Adkins (songs), Miss Patricia Chaplin (Maori song and recitation), Mrs. D. Hyland (recitations), Mrs. C. Jackson and Mrs. W. Morrison (humorous sketch). Mrs. Burrell, sen., and Mrs. Morrison were the pianists. Many useful and decorative gifts were received by the two guests of honour.

An enjoyable afternoon was held at the residence of Mrs. Fazaekley, Taylor Street, Avondaie, last week in aid of Plunket funds. Competitions and songs were rendered by Mrs. Howie and Mrs. Davies, the winners of the competitions being Mrs. Simpson and Mrs. Ralf Gates (Kumeu). Mrs. Fazaekley and Mrs. Penman (president), as joint hostesses, received the following:—Mesdames Walden, Greep, Davies, Ralf Gates (Kumeu), Thorn, Whale, Rigden, Chaplin, Banks, Everton, Runciman, Simpson, Howie, Marsden, Howie, Browne, Ritchie.
