THEFT FROM WAREHOUSE
LIQUOR AND MONEY ENTRY THROUGH SKYLIGHT Burglars broke into the warehouse of Hughes and Cossar, Limited, importers, indentors and general merchants, 30-34 Swanson Street, City, at the week-end, and stole a quantity of liquor and £llss in money. The theft was discovered when the staff arrived yesterday morning. The premises have been entered twice previously, the most recent occasion being last September, when burglars blew open a safe and stole about £ll in notes and silver.
The intruders at the week-end entered by the same means as the burglars responsible for the theft last September. They climbed on to the roof and forced open a skylight above the sample room. Once inside, they broke a glass panel in a door leading to the office and made a thorough search. They opened a number of cases and sampled various liquors, carrying bottles and glasses with them about the premises. Since the burglary last September, the firm has made a practice of leaving the safes open, with notes prominently displayed indicating that no money has been left. The intruders searched the desks, however, and found £1 15s in a drawer. They also took a quantity of liquor with them*. When leaving, the intruders reached the skylight by using a. ladder they took from the office, after finding that none of the street doors could be opened from inside. They gained tho ground after crossing the roof of an adjoining building. Tho thieves are thought to have been responsible for throwing a bottle of ale through the window of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association in Holdsworth's Building, Albert Street.
