BREEDING LINES

THE EASTER HANDICAP WELL-BRED CONTESTANTS ANALYSIS OF PEDIGREES BY SPEARMINT In the large field of 24 acceptors for the Easter Handicap no fewer than 18 different sires are represented. The sires with more than one representative are Kilbrouey three, and Chief Ruler, Gay Shield, Romeo and Acre two each. The only sires who have previous winners are Hunting Song (Hunting Cry), and Lucullus (Pegaway). Four different horses have won tho Easter Handicap twice, Yatapa in 1879 and 18S0, Impulse in 1891 and 1893. Rex in ! 1893 and 1899, and Reremoana in 1925 and 1926. No previous winner of tho race is engaged on this occasion. The weight-carry-ing record for the race is shared by Hilda, j Nonette and Reremoana, each of whom ! carried 9.11. The palm must be awarded to Nonette, who won with this weight as a three-year-old. Golden Wings carried 9.9, Chortle 9.7, Advance (as a three-year-old) 9.6 and Pegaway 9.5, which is Kiltowyn's weight. The latter's task is therefore by no means impossible. The time record for tho raco is Jonathan's 1.37 last year. Speed and Stamina Pride of place this year goes to Kiltowyn, who is by Kilbroney—Towyn, by Lucullus— j Congress, by Hierarch —To Huinga. by Hotchkiss —Sunningdale (imp.), by Hampton. There is a drop to Diatomous, whose pedigree also shows a combination* of speed and stamina. He is by Diacqueuod—Spangle, by Alartian—Nantes, by Stepniak, from the family that produced Niehtmarck. Silver Scorn and Silver Ring. Diacquenod comes from the sprinting Orby branch of the Bend Or family, and in this pedigree sprinting ability probably predominates.
