OBITUARY
MR. ARTHUR WHITAKER [by telegraph—own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Monday The death has occurred of Mr. Arthur Whitaker, a resident of Palmerston North for 20 rears. He was born at Bradford and educated at the Bradford Grammar School where he displayed considerable scholastic ability, particularly in literature. On completing his education he entered the engineering profession and as a representative of a large English firm travelled extensively for a number of years, visiting South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In 1905 he came to the Dominion to erect plant for the Tonga Bay Granite Company, Nelson. In 1915 he took up his residence in Pal mors ton North, where for a time he conducted a motor garage. Recently he was on the staff of the City Council gasworks. A chess enthusiast, Mr. Whitaker revived the Palmerston North Club, of which he was secretary for a considerable time. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. •
